Dr. Luis Ma. Calingo named President of Woodbury University

Dr. Luis Ma. Calingo, a UP alumnus, has been named the next President of the 127 yeard old Woodbury University located in Burbank California. "Chito" to his friends, Dr. Calingo got his bachelors degree in industrial engineering in 1976 and masters in urban and regional planning in 1978 from the University of the Philippines. He completed his MBA and Ph.D at the prestigious Joseph Katz Graduate School of Business at the University of Pittsburg. He becomes the first UP engineering alumnus, the second Filipino American and part of the elite group of Asian-Americans to break through the "bamboo ceiling" to be appointed President of a US college or university.

He held various teaching and academic positions in a number of universities among them, the John Caroll University and Fisher Graduate School in Ohio, Cal State University in Fresno and Long Beach and Dominican University in California as its executive vice president. He was a resource person and lecturer of several international schools such as the University of Australia, Nanyang University in Singapore and the University of the Philippines. He was a trainor and facilitator of well-known multinational corporations and non governmental organizations. He also authored several books on strategic planning, entrepreneurship and management.

Before he moved to the US, Dr. Calingo served as Chief of Staff at the Farm Systems Development Corporation (FSDC) and Corporate Staff Director at the Ministry of Human Settlements (MHS).

He is married to Gemeline and has 3 daughters, Ashley, Alexandra, and Arienne. In his email to friends he said, "From those to whom much is given, much shall be required" (Luke 12:48). I'm well aware of the responsibilities and the challenges that accompany leadership positions, and I'd very much welcome your prayers, positive thoughts, and unsolicited advice.

Let us celebrate this historic event and pray that he succeeds. Godspeed ahead Chito.
